DISFUNCTION. An individual can be "at work" while their spirit and mind are somewhere else. Taking many breaks, arriving late, and leaving early - not functioning at a high level is a symptom of burn-out.
COSTLY. Turnover leads to a loss of talent, high costs associated with training replacements, and negatively impacts morale. In addition, burn-out hurts virtually all aspects of team bonding and performance.
A recent GALLUP study revealed 66% of the workforce experience varying levels of burn-out each year. Monitoring for early signs of burn-out is important. Even better is identifying and mitigating on-the-job stress for burn-out prevention (before burn-out seeps into the psyche).
